Meet the Reach for the Stars Pragmatist Hi there! I’m Carter – just graduated with a double major in American Studies and Dance from Connecticut College and am now back home in Los Angeles attempting to figure out my next move. It’s been an exciting and inspiring few years – I studied abroad in Southern Spain, lived in NYC where I worked as an archival research assistant for my advisor and mentor and choreographed a dance about being a groupie in 1964. I spent a huge part of the last year writing an honors thesis about domestic kitchens in 19th century America, which allowed me to bring together my love of food, cooking and women’s history. Despite leaving some of my closest friends and community, I decided to come back out west and take a much-needed break before facing the reality of the “real world” (dun dun dun). That being said, anyone who knows me, knows I don’t do “breaks” very well. While I take my “break,” I’ll be working part-time for a small non-profit arts organization, doing some development, marketing and programming. Looking ahead, I’d like to continue on the non-profit track, though I’d love to find a way to incorporate my passion for restaurants, food and public health. I’m really interested in the way food sits at the intersection of economics, agriculture, politics, culture and history, and can function as a tool for social change. Though slightly terrified, I’m excited for what’s ahead…especially the part where it turns out nothing like I had planned or expected. |

Favorite Line of Poetry: But we loved with a love that was more than love ("Annabel Lee," Poe) Meet the Orange Juice Addict I’m Mel. Sometimes my friends call me T-Bo — like Tim Tebow but with far more athleticism. I just finished being a full-time student and am trying to figure out how to be a full-time adult. After majoring in English and American Studies, I want to spend my life writing stories and interviewing cool people doing cool things. I’m back in Massachusetts, plotting how to make this dream a reality, and making far too many peanut butter cookies for one human to consume. I'm also doing practical things like freelance writing and assisting one of my professors/life coaches with her research. Other hobbies include: biking, staring at art, teaching myself to cook and using online job sites until my eyes get all blurry and watery. I think I want to be a journalist. Or a superhero. My undergrad years shaped me in ways I could never have predicted, academically and personally. I spent a summer working for a nonprofit arts organization in Providence. I served as co-Editor in Chief of my college's newspaper and worked with some talented, funny, badass individuals. Last semester, I did independent research and wrote on mental health programs and resources for college students (counterproductively stressing out the whole time). I ran around campus with a cardboard cutout of Justin Bieber for a year. I learned I am addicted to orange juice. And I never quite figured out how to dance. |
